Outdoor Movies: Backyard Movie Theater

Want to enjoy the cool evening air and catch a movie? Want a fun night for your family or a fun evening for your kids friends? Why not host an outdoor movie night. Pop up some popcorn, invite your friends and layout some blankets. All you need is a movie screen, a projector and a dvd player.

An outdoor movie night is great for themed parties, birthday parties, kids night out, cub scout meetings, pool parties or just a quiet family night.

There are plenty of companies out there who can set it up for you but for the price of two movie nights from a professional you can buy all the items your need and have a full summer of outdoor movies. If you don’t want to show it on the side of your house or put up a bed sheet for the screen you can get an inflatable outdoor movie screen. The screens come in all sizes and shapes and while some can cost up to $1600 you can get a good one for under $150.

The projector is the most costly item and you will need to do some research on the best price and model. They can be rented but you can find one used on craigslist or ebay, you might even get the okay from your boss to borrow one for the weekend. Since you will be showing the movie outside and not in a dark room you will need a projector that is a little more powerful than a projector used indoors. In a dark room where you can control the light you can use less lumen but since you are outside and there may be ambient light from inside the house, the neighbors house or streetlights you should get a projector with at least 2000 lumen power. You might look at getting a multimedia projector that plays DVD’s and has a speaker system. Since this is what you are getting it for and you won’t need to hook up a DVD player or speaker system. It is one less thing to buy and to hook up. Plus most multimedia systems have jacks already designated for games like rockband or karaoke and other accessories. Since you will be using the projector at night finding one with a glow in the dark remote is a nice feature.

If your projector doesn’t come with a DVD player or the speaker system is not good enough for the amount of friends you have you will need to add that to your list of things to get and set up – another good reason to get a good multimedia projector!

Don’t forget to get some extension cords, some landscaping spikes to hold down any wires so no one trips over them and a cooler for some ice cold drinks. Pop open your drink and press play for your very own backyard movie night.
